Bali Painting Workshop

Inspired by the tropical landscapes and gentle culture of the Indonesian Island of Bali, this journaling and watercolor mixed-media workshop will guide you through the techniques needed to create original compositions. Using watercolor as a base, we will learn to develop our paintings with over-lays of charcoal, pastels, india inks, and gold leaf.

Based in the quiet fishing village of Amed on the eastern shore of Bali, each day will start with an optional meditation/gentle morning yoga class on the patio by the pool of our villa.

Following breakfast, we will have a one hour in-depth introduction to each of the following mediums; watercolor, pastel, india ink, and conte/charcoal. For the remainder of the morning we will take our journals “in the field”— to the beach, amongst the gardens, or into the colorful balinese landscape to gather visual information and compose ideas. In the afternoon we will work at the villa where we will expand the creative process using local indonesian rice papers and an assortment of materials to develop more complete compositions in a one-on-one teaching environment. Each evening, our workshop assistant, certified yoga instructor Coral Ferguson, will offer yoga classes before we gather for dinner.

Steeped in a tradition of textiles, basketry and painting, eastern Bali provides a rich source of inspiration for our painting workshop. Amed, known for its coral reefs, diving, and snorkeling is a lovely ocean compliment to the inland temples and water-gardens of the region.
