ASSESSMENT

At Watershed School, we believe that assessment is a critical part of the learning process itself, rather than a way to judge success or failure. Its purposes are:

Students graduate from Watershed School on the basis of demonstrated competencies rather than class time and grades. Therefore, time is flexible and students are not always organized by grades, nor do they receive grades.

In the absence of letter grades, student performance and progress is evaluated on an ongoing basis through projects and presentations that demonstrate student learning: self-reflection and assessment; regular one-on-one meetings with advisors; feedback from community mentors; and the collection of work in student portfolios.

A portfolio is a collection of your "best" work over time. It is a way of documenting and demonstrating your learning and growth. Trimesters conclude with Presentations of Learning in which you present your learning to an audience of peers, educators, parents, and community experts. You are assessed on the content and delivery of the presentation by a panel of evaluators.

At the end of every trimester, educators write narrative evaluations that address your academic, personal, and community accomplishments, growth, and challenges. These "Narratives" then help inform your Individualized Learning Plan for the following trimester.

In order to enter the "Senior Institute", students demonstrate their readiness through the completion of a Gateway Portfolio and Presentation. This portfolio is a compilation of the past 2-3 years of work at Watershed School and the presentation serves as a Rite of Passage into a new phase of learning involving greater student direction and responsibility.
