Leaf Pack Experiments

Students ventured out into their own backyards and nearby open spaces to conduct Leaf Pack Experiments. These experiments utilized tree leaves and aquatic insects to measure and monitor the health of an ecosystem.

Project Overview

Each student designed an original experiment to investigate the ecology and overarching health of their local ecosystem. To capture this data they created leaf packs—leaf litter collected in mesh bags that provide habitat for macroinvertebrates—and placed them in a local stream. By counting and identifying macro invertebrates (things like snails and damselfly larvae) they’ll get an indication of their local stream health because different species are more or less tolerant to pollution. We’re still awaiting the results… stay tuned!
