Joie holds multiple degrees in English literature, creative writing, and education with a continual weakness for curating her mind. She holds a BA in English Literature and International Studies, an MA in Literary Arts, an MA and PhD in Curriculum & Instruction, and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction and Mixed Media Arts. She has built a professional and creative life that balances formal education and experiential knowledge. She has been an educator for over 20 years, which includes time spent as a dance coach, English, humanities, and education technology teacher. In addition to her work at Watershed, Joie teaches at the University of Denver in the Nonprofit Leadership and Arts & Culture Management programs. She is a consultant for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and continually works to support marginalized communities. She co-founded Friends of the Lakota Nation, a designated 501(c)(3) that provides assistance to the communities on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She enjoys life with her partner, many loyal pets, and three beautiful and complex teenagers whose pursuit to question their world and those who live within it runs parallel to her own.
