ROV Experiments

Students were tasked with designing and building an underwater, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to survey and salvage artifacts from a simulated shipwreck in a swimming pool.

The mission

divided into three separate challenges:

  • Speed - how quickly can you get your ROV to the shipwreck to increase your success in salvaging artifacts and surveying the wreck?

  • Sampling - how many samples can you retrieve from the wreckage and return to the surface?

  • Survey - what is the extent of the shipwreck damage including scale, area of impact and the state of the ship itself?
