We have some new faces on staff at Watershed!

Carmela Ortiz, Humanities Educator

New educators- Emily, Gillian, Carmela, & Sonia.

Carmela joins Watershed after serving as a High School Global Studies educator and advisor at The Churchill School and Center in New York and before that as an English Language & Culture Assistant in Madrid. Carmela earned a Bachelor's degree in History and a minor in Philosophy from the University of Colorado at Boulder, discovering her passion for the outdoors during this time. Returning to her roots in New York, Carmela pursued a Master's degree in Teaching Adolescent Social Studies from Hunter College in Manhattan to focus on inclusive education and experiential learning. Emily Visco, Science Educator

Before moving to Boulder and joining Watershed, Emily taught chemistry for 3 years at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. In addition to working in the classroom, she served as a dorm parent and coached the ice hockey and crew teams. The past three summers, Emily has led trips for Wilderness Adventures in Hawai'i, Costa Rica, and Ecuador (including the Galápagos Islands). Emily earned a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Chemistry and Spanish from Colby College where she also studied for a semester in Madrid, Spain. Learn more about Emily here.

Gillian Kennedy, Math Educator

Gillian Kennedy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Villanova University, where she also minored in math. After working as a Structural Engineer for a short time, Gillian decided to become a teacher. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Teaching Math from Boston University and taught math and computer science at Samuel Fels High School in Philadelphia, PA prior to coming to Watershed School. Sonia SitjaRubio, Spanish Educator

An experienced educator, Sonia has taught a variety of undergraduate Spanish classes at the University of Texas at Austin and at Northern Virginia Community College, as well as a variety of high school courses at The Potomac School, VA, The Cambridge School of Weston, MA), and most recently at Colorado Academy in Denver. Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Sonia earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Hispanic Studies from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, her Master’s Degree in Spanish Literature from The University of Texas at Austin, and completed doctoral work in French and Spanish literature before starting her career as a high school educator. Alex Davies, Administrative Assistant-External Affairs

Alex is joining us in a new position for Watershed School! After earning her her B.A. in Women & Gender Studies from the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Alex pursued her TEFL certificate in Italy, where she was lucky enough to spend the next year teaching English to adults and traveling. An internship at a nonprofit prompted her move to Colorado nearly ten years ago, and she hasn’t looked back! After several years in the Boulder restaurant industry, Alex eventually made her way back to working in the educational sphere, most recently in an administrative assistant role at Boulder Country Day School.
